Natural Allergy Remedies: Using Allergy Remedies that are Natural

Most allergy sufferers suffer from hay fever, an allergic reaction to pollen, and look to natural allergy remedies to help relieve their symptoms.

Hay fever causes an allergic reaction – essentially the mucous membrane associated with the eyes, the nose and air passages, become inflamed after exposure to airborne allergens, including pollen. The ensuing result is that the body releases histamine, then leads to swelling and inflammation.

The most typical signs of hay fever involve itchy eyse, sneezing, a runny nose, throat that feels irritated and fatigue. There is no cure for hay fever, so most treatments focus on easing the discomfort of symptoms as they happen. For an overview of some herbal and natural allergy remedies, keep reading.

Avoid Exposure

If you're adverse to taking any drugs, your best defense against allergy symptoms is to simply avoid exposure. Stay inside during pollen season and use HEPA filters indoors. If you live in a dry climate, you can use humidifiers to keep your humidity levels at about 35 percent.

Saline Solution

Using saline or saltwater solutions as a nasal wash can help relieve symptoms as it will flush out pollen. Add 1 tsp of salt to a pint of warm, distilled water. Then, sniff a small amount of the saline solution into your nostrils one at a time and then blow your nose. If you're uncomfortable snorting the liquid, a syringe can be used or a nasal spray.

Butterbur

Butterbur and the compounds it contains stop the inflammation associated with hay fever and allergies, and therefore improve the symptoms. Butterbur has the advantage of not causing the drowsiness that most anti-allergy medications do. Whole butterbur herb contains compounds that can be toxic to the liver and therefore only extracts that do not contain the pyrrolizidine alkaloids or compounds should be ingested.

Nettle Leaf

Nettle Leaf can often be purchased in tea or capsule form. There is little scientific evidence to support nettle leaf's effect on allergies or hay fever, however many patients and experts agree that it can help reduce symptoms.

Gumweed

Taking 30-60 drops of gumweed tincture three times every day can help reduce the symptoms of hay fever, particularly the cough that can result from overactive sinuses, phlegm or a runny nose.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is often used as one of many natural allergy remedies. It can be very effective as it works on regulating the body's immune system to reduce the re-occurrence rate as well as improving symptoms. Most patients undergo twice-weekly sessions during the hay fever season to reduce symptoms and ward off hay fever.
