About Menopause

Menopause marks the end of menstruation and a woman's reproductive years. There is no definitive age at which this occurs. On average, it tends to happen around the age of 51, but that's not a hard and fast rule by any means.

The perimenopause, or period leading up to menopause is marked by irregular periods and generally begins when a woman is in her 40s. Menopause can go on for many years, however once a woman hasn't had a period for a full year, she is considered post-menopausal.

Symptoms of Menopause

The symptoms of menopause include irregular periods, hot flashes, disturbed sleep, night sweats, emotional distress, vaginal dryness, dry skin, weight gain and a decreased libido.

Treating Menopause

To alleviate the symptoms of menopause, most treatments focus on adjusting hormone levels and introducing lifestyle changes. These can both help limit the physical and emotional impact that menopause can have on many women's lives.

Natural Remedies for Menopause Symptoms

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is recognized for its ability to reduce or eliminate menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, tiredness, insomnia,  depression, anxiety, and mood swings. Black cohosh also acts as an anti-inflammatory, digestive aid, generic and mild sedative and blood pressure lowering agent.

Clinical studies show that black cohosh does indeed reduce symptoms of menopause in a similar manner to low doses of estrogen replacement. Most importantly, these effects occur without increasing the lining of the uterus or estrogen levels in the body.

The recommended dose is 40 mg per day. Black cohosh isn't recommended for women with a history of breast cancer.

Dong Quai

Dong Quai is an herb that has been shown to decrease symptoms of menopause. Simply boil 1 tsp of the root or take 3 ml twice a day. Don't take Dong Quai if you're also taking anti-coagulant medications.

Liver and Adrenal Tonic

Because adrenal and liver stress exacerbates the symptoms of menopause, combine equal parts of the following herbs to support adrenal function and repair and detoxify the liver: licorice, wild yam, Dong Quai, black cohosh, milk thistle, burdock and bupleurum. Add cinnamon and spearmint to taste and then boil 1 tbsp for every cup of water and drink three times a day.

While many of these natural remedies for menopause won't relieve or eliminate your symptoms completely, they can help to dramatically reduce them. In addition to trying these various herbs, you should also focus on improving your overall health, exercising and eating a healthy diet.
